Best pCloud Alternatives 2026: 5 Tested Solutions for When pCloud Isn't the Right Fit

pCloud isn't for everyone. Our 2026 comparison of the best alternatives — Proton Drive, Tresorit, Sync.com, Internxt, Filen — for users who need default zero-knowledge, stricter jurisdiction, or no lifetime commitment.

Who Shouldn't Use pCloud in 2026?

pCloud is an excellent service. Swiss jurisdiction, compelling lifetime deal, top upload performance (41 Mbps median on European fiber), rock-solid desktop client across all platforms. We recommend it in multiple contexts — our detailed pCloud review remains one of our most-read pieces.

But there are four specific situations where pCloud is not the right choice:

1. You want zero-knowledge by default on 100% of your account. At pCloud, zero-knowledge encryption is limited to the Crypto Folder — a separate, paid module (€49.99/year or ~€125 lifetime). The rest of your pCloud storage uses AES-256 at-rest encryption with keys managed by pCloud. In practice: pCloud can technically access your files outside the Crypto Folder (even if they don't without legal compulsion). At Proton Drive, Tresorit, Internxt, Filen, and Sync.com: all your files are zero-knowledge by default, no add-on, no extra cost. For the technical nuance, read our guide E2E vs zero-knowledge cloud storage 2026.

2. You have HIPAA or ISO 27001 compliance requirements. pCloud doesn't hold these certifications. For an SMB in healthcare, legal, or finance, they are often non-negotiable contractual prerequisites. Tresorit is the only encrypted cloud alternative that provides them in 2026.

3. You require a fully open-source client. pCloud only published its Crypto module algorithms — not the full desktop or mobile client. Proton Drive, Internxt, and Filen publish their entire clients on GitHub with reproducible builds.

4. You prefer a cancellable monthly subscription. The pCloud model is optimized for lifetime commitments. If you want the flexibility to migrate every 2-3 years, Proton Drive or Sync.com with monthly subscriptions are better fits.

If you recognize yourself in any of these four profiles, here are the alternatives we tested and compared.

Proton Drive — Best Alternative for Total Privacy

Proton Drive is the top choice for users who want real zero-knowledge across their entire storage without any configuration or add-on.

What makes it different from pCloud: at Proton, every file you upload is encrypted client-side with a key Proton doesn't hold — by default, across the entire account, without exception. No need to create a dedicated folder. No add-on to pay. Proton has three public SEC Consult audits (2021, 2023, 2025), an active post-quantum roadmap (Kyber-768 on Mail since April 2024, Drive announced for late 2026), and a fully open-source desktop client on GitHub.

The decisive argument: the integrated ecosystem. At €12.99/month (Proton Unlimited), you get Drive 500 GB + ProtonMail 10 aliases + Calendar + unlimited VPN + Pass (password manager). If you were paying for these services separately (encrypted email + privacy VPN + password manager), you'd easily exceed €25/month. The savings are real.

Where pCloud still wins: upload speed (41 Mbps vs 22 Mbps median for Proton Drive on European fiber), total 5-year cost if you use the pCloud lifetime deal, and the large-file sharing experience. If you already have pCloud well configured with sensitive data in the Crypto Folder, migrating to Proton Drive isn't necessarily an upgrade.

Best for: privacy-conscious individuals, journalists, activists, freelancers who want the all-in-one Proton ecosystem.

Tresorit — The Only HIPAA/ISO 27001 Certified Alternative

Tresorit is the non-negotiable alternative for regulated organizations. Founded in 2011, acquired by Swiss Post in 2022, it's the only encrypted cloud provider combining ISO 27001 + HIPAA + FINRA + quarterly Ernst & Young audits with partial public reports.

What makes it different from pCloud: real enterprise certifications, default zero-knowledge on all files, client deployable in Active Directory environments, Outlook and Teams integrations. For an SMB in healthcare, legal, finance, or public administration, these points aren't optional — they are contractual requirements often mandated by clients or insurers.

The downsides: the price. Tresorit Business costs ~€25/user/month. Over 5 years for a 10-person team, that's €15,000 — vs €9,000 for Proton for Business. The desktop client isn't open-source (criticized by hardcore privacy communities). No free tier (14-day trial only).

Best for: healthcare, finance, legal, consulting, public administration SMBs with contractual compliance requirements. See our comparison Proton Drive vs Tresorit vs pCloud Switzerland 2026.

Sync.com — Best Collaborative North American Alternative

Sync.com (Toronto, Canada) is the most solid compromise for freelancers and small teams wanting real zero-knowledge at a competitive price with a mature collaborative app.

What makes it different from pCloud: default zero-knowledge on all files (no add-on), well-developed collaborative application (expiring share links with password protection, lightweight Office co-editing), straightforward pricing at $8/month for 2 TB on Solo Professional.

The jurisdiction caveat: Canada is a 5 Eyes member and enforces PCMLTFA strengthened by C-26 (2024). For politically sensitive data, this is less favorable than Switzerland or Spain. For standard professional use without high political-risk data, this makes no practical difference. To understand the jurisdictional implications, read our analysis 5/9/14 Eyes and cloud privacy 2026.

Best for: North American freelancers and small teams, sharing large files with clients, collaborative backup without compromising on zero-knowledge.

Internxt — Best Budget Lifetime Alternative

Internxt (Valencia, Spain) is 2026's credible open-source challenger. If you're looking for a default zero-knowledge cloud with a lifetime deal even cheaper than pCloud, this is the option to look at seriously.

What makes it different from pCloud: default zero-knowledge on all files without an add-on, 100% open-source client on GitHub (reproducible build), Cure53 audit published in 2024, EU jurisdiction (outside 5 Eyes), 2 TB lifetime at ~$119 on regular promo — cheaper than the pCloud Premium alone (€199) and without a separate Crypto add-on to pay.

2026 limitations: less mature ecosystem (Internxt Mail in beta, no integrated VPN at the same level), slightly lower upload speed (~28 Mbps vs 41 Mbps), no published post-quantum roadmap. Enterprise compliance is limited to GDPR (no HIPAA or ISO 27001).

Best for: open-source-first individuals on a tight budget, users wanting to maximize the security/price ratio long-term.

Filen — The Open-Source Alternative Hosted in Germany

Filen is a lesser-known but solid option for tech-savvy users who want a fully open-source zero-knowledge cloud hosted in Germany (strict GDPR jurisdiction).

What makes it different from pCloud: 100% open-source client (GitHub), default zero-knowledge, servers in Germany (strict EU), generous 10 GB free tier. Competitive pricing with a lifetime plan available.

The limitations: shorter track record (founded 2021), smaller community than Proton or pCloud, less formalized security audit, less polished mobile apps. For critical very long-term data, Filen's longevity is more uncertain than Proton or pCloud.

Best for: tech-savvy users who want an EU open-source cloud without paying the Proton premium, redundancy backups.

Honesty matters: if you use pCloud with the Crypto Folder enabled for sensitive data, and if the lifetime deal fits your time horizon, pCloud is an excellent choice. Swiss jurisdiction, reference-class upload performance, robust desktop client, the most proven lifetime deal on the market (pCloud AG has been profitable since 2018).

Switching to an alternative is only justified in the four specific cases described in the introduction. For everyone else, pCloud with the Crypto add-on covers the need perfectly well. If you want to decide from a fully informed position, check our complete pCloud review 2026 before migrating.
