Sync is not backup
This is the misunderstanding that costs people their files: syncing is not the same as backing up. Free tiers, pricing and lock-in
Most providers offer a free tier (typically 2-15 GB) to get you in, then charge monthly or yearly for more. Two things are worth knowing before you commit:
- "Unlimited" rarely is. Plans advertised as unlimited usually carry fair-use caps or throttling in the fine print; for large libraries, read the limits.
- Lock-in is real. Once gigabytes of photos and documents live in one ecosystem, moving is painful - so the cheap or pre-installed option (iCloud on iPhone, Google Drive on Android) tends to win by default, not by being the most private.
