Quick answer: Proton Drive has a free plan with 5 GB and one storage-only paid plan, Drive Plus, at $4.99 a month for 200 GB. Everything above it is a bundle: Proton Unlimited ($12.99, 500 GB) adds Proton VPN, Mail, Calendar and Pass; Proton Duo ($19.99, 2 TB) covers two people; Proton Family ($29.99, 3 TB) covers up to six. If you only want encrypted storage, Drive Plus is the plan. Pay for Unlimited only if you would use the VPN or the mail as well.

Three things to know before you compare this table with another site's:

  • Billing period. The page has a Monthly / Yearly switch. The figures above are the monthly-billing ones. Switch the toggle on Proton's page to see the yearly rate that applies to you.
  • Currency. Proton lets you choose CHF, EUR or USD. We read the USD prices.
  • Promotions. Discount labels on the page change over time. We list the regular monthly figures and no promotional price.

What each dollar buys

A simple way to compare the individual plans is the listed price per 100 GB on monthly billing:

  • Drive Plus: $4.99 for 200 GB, about $2.50 per 100 GB.
  • Proton Unlimited: $12.99 for 500 GB, about $2.60 per 100 GB, with the VPN, mail, calendar and password manager on top.
  • Proton Duo: $19.99 for 2 TB, about $1.00 per 100 GB, shared by two people.
  • Proton Family: $29.99 for 3 TB, about $1.00 per 100 GB, shared by up to six.

So on storage alone, Drive Plus and Unlimited cost about the same per gigabyte. The step from Plus to Unlimited is not a storage upgrade, it is a decision to buy Proton's other services. Duo and Family are where the price per gigabyte drops, provided you actually share the plan.

A portable drive is a one-off purchase but sits in one place. A cloud plan is a monthly cost for a copy that lives somewhere else.

Which plan should you take?

  • You want to try it, or you only store documents: Proton Free. 5 GB fills fast with photos but goes a long way with text files and PDFs.
  • You want encrypted storage for your photos and files, nothing else: Drive Plus. It is the only paid plan that sells storage alone, and 10 years of version history is a real safety net against accidental deletion or ransomware.
  • You already pay for a VPN or a mail service elsewhere: add up what those cost you. If the total is near $8 a month, Proton Unlimited replaces them and gives you 500 GB.
  • Two people, lots of photos: Proton Duo, 2 TB for two.
  • A household: Proton Family, 3 TB for up to six accounts.
  • A team: Drive Professional is priced per user, with access management.

What the price does not tell you

Price is only one part of the choice. Before you move your files, check how Proton Drive handles what you do every day: desktop sync on your operating system, photo backup on your phone, and sharing with people who have no Proton account. Our Proton Drive review goes through these points, and Proton Drive vs iCloud covers the question for Apple users.

Summary

Proton Drive's price list is short once you see its logic: one free plan, one storage plan at $4.99 a month for 200 GB, then bundles that add Proton's other products or more users. Start on Free, move to Drive Plus when 5 GB is not enough, and consider Unlimited only for the services around the storage.
